Thomas Louis "Tommy" Mathewes

Thomas Louis "Tommy" Mathewes, 67, of Charleston, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Monday, June 3, 2024. His funeral service will be held Thursday, June 6, 2024 at Holy Ascension Orthodox Church, 265 North Shelmore Boulevard at 10:00 o’clock in the morning. Interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 5, 2024 at Holy Ascension Orthodox Church from 5:00 o’clock until 7:00 o’clock that evening. Tommy was born August 12, 1956 in Charleston, South Carolina to Mary Cuthbert Carnes Mathewes and the late Benjamin Louis Mathewes, III. Tommy grew up in South Windermere, where he made lifelong friends and memories alongside his older brother Gary and sister Cathy. His son Thomas and daughter Anna will forever cherish their close bond with their loving father. He was an adored and adoring grandfather to his precious granddaughters Gigi and Harris, who lovingly nicknamed him “Pop Pop.” He was an avid cyclist with Oceanic Racing Team, an all-around lifelong athlete, and dedicated Gamecock fan.  Tommy loved life in the Lowcountry and any time spent on or near the water.  He was a committed member and sponsor to Friends of Bill. Tommy spent his career with Bearing Distributors and considered his coworkers and clients to be family.  Tommy will forever be remembered as a man of deep Christian faith and an active member of Holy Ascension Orthodox Church.  In his final chapter and battle against cancer, he fought the good fight, kept the faith and finished well.

Tommy is survived by his mother, Mary; dear and beloved friend, Terrie Mae Clarke; son, Thomas Louis Mathewes II (Haley); daughter, Anna Elizabeth Mathewes all of Charleston, SC; sister, Cathy M. Harter (Rusty) of Greenville, SC; brother, Father Gregory "Gary" Mathewes-Green (Frederica) of Johnson City, TN; and two grandchildren: Mary Virginia "Gigi" Mathewes (age 6) and Harris Harrington Mathewes (age 2).
