Toby Eugene Ashburn, 77, of North Charleston, South Carolina, died on Thursday, April 23, 2015. His Funeral Service will be held Monday, April 27, 2015 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday, April 26, 2015 in Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Toby (Gene) was born July 19, 1937 in Crossville, Tennessee, to the late Horace Turner Ashburn and Ella Dhea Ashburn. Gene grew up on the Homestead in Tennessee, graduated from Asheboro High School in North Carolina, and served in the US Navy. He earned his electrical engineering degree from the University of South Carolina and retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard as a nuclear engineer. He was an avid golfer and member of the Miler Country Club. He was a member of the Essex Village Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Lundy Ashburn; brother, sister and their spouses, Roland and Rayene Ashburn, Roger and Janet MacWhirter; daughter, son and their spouses, Mike and Angie Schooff, Travis and Wendy Ashburn; three grandchildren, Claire and Trevor Ashburn, David Michael Schooff. He will be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews and those who called him "Uncle Gene."
