As the new moon rose into place, Timothy Nolan Crosby died peacefully Monday, February 8, 2016, surrounded by his family. He dauntlessly fought a very brief battle with liver cancer.
Born in Charleston at Saint Francis Hospital on July 20, 1959, Tim was the fifth child of Allene Nolan Crosby and the late Captain Horace Winston Crosby, Sr.
A lifelong James Islander, he attended the Church of the Nativity Catholic School where he served as an alter-boy, graduated from James Island High School where he lettered in Wrestling and studied Welding at Trident Technical College. A passionate lover of fishing, the ocean and the estuaries of the Lowcountry, he spent his work and leisure time as close to the water as possible.
A former partner with Crosby's Fish and Shrimp Company, which was founded by his father, he spent the first half of his life shrimping, crabbing, oystering and fishing, which took him to Georgia, Florida and Louisiana. Though the last eighteen (18) years were spent as a clerk on the Charleston waterfront with the International Longshorman's Association (I.L.I. Local 1771,) where he saw the sun come up or down on a daily basis, he also continued to spend time harvesting from the creeks. From trapping glass eels which were then shipped to Japan, to harvesting horseshoe crabs for a local company to extract Amebocytes (used to make Limulus amebocyte lysate - a product used for the detection of bacterial endotoxins in medical applications,) Tim loved to be on the water and in the water.
An avid and excellent fisherman, his passion for the sea led him to greatly enjoy his membership with the Charleston Coastal Anglers, where he shared his joy with like minded fisherman, taking great pride in the monies raised yearly through the golf tournament and fishing tournament to help others.
He is survived by his son, Timothy Nolan Crosby, II; two step-sons, Richard Horan (Amanda) and Ryan Horan; his mother, Allene Nolan Crosby; four brothers, Horace Crosby Jr., Marty Crosby, Chris Crosby (Trudy), and Mitchell Crosby (Randall Felkel); two sisters, Ellie Berry (Chris) and Joanie Cooksey (Neal); brother-in-law, Tommy Croffead (Pattie), all of Charleston; ten nieces and nephews; three great nieces and nephews; fifteen first cousins; and a plethora of extended family throughout the Coastal Carolina Plain.
He was predeceased by his father, Horace Winston Crosby, Sr; sister, Pati Crosby Croffead; nephew, Steve Kulbacki; first cousins, Doris Ann Brown and Henry Brown; and his very best friend, Mark Mizell.
