HTC Thomas Beverly "Tom" Young USN, Ret. died Thursday, April 7, 2011, in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Tom was born in lower Richland County to the late Elise Cotton and James Hopkins Young, Sr. on June 30th 1920. He was a graduate of #1 Consolidated High School, now known as Lower Richland. He excelled in sports and attended Clemson College. He retired from the U.S. Navy then lived in North Charleston where he worked as a shipfitter at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. Tom was one of seven original Charleston County Park and Recreation Commissioners who started in 1968 and retired after 20 plus years of services. He was a member of the James Island Post 147 American Legion, past President of the Fleet Reserve Branch 50, Elks Club and Rifle Club. He was a member of North Charleston United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Young. He is survived by two daughters, Beverly Lanham and Vivian (Bill) Wiley; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, James Hopkins "Jimmy" Young and his wife Frieda; sister, Ann Hunter and her husband Walter; nieces; nephews; a very special friend, Florence Carson and her family and Sondra and Tony Druzbacky. Tom loved life, music, dancing, the Clemson Tigers and he never met a stranger. He was a member of Clemson IPTAY for over forty years. As it is said: "Life is better left to chance: I could have missed the pain but I would have had to miss the dance".
The funeral service will be held in North Charleston United Methodist Church, Sunday, April 10, 2011 at 4:00 PM. Interment with military honors to follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior at the church. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the North Charleston United Methodist Church, 1125 E. Montague Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405.
