Thomas (Tommy) Cary Walker, Sr., 75, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2023.
Tommy was born on June 7, 1948, in Charleston, South Carolina, to William P. Walker, Sr., and Mabel Isaac Walker. He spent his childhood in Georgetown, where he found his passions for hunting, fishing, and good-natured mayhem. Throughout his life, Tommy applied his sharp and curious mind to new hobbies and challenges. He built rockets, raced cars, and was the foremost fireworks specialist at the famous annual Third of July party.
Tommy started his own business in Columbia in the ‘70s, leaning into his natural acumen and his particularly outgoing personality. Returning to the lowcountry in the ‘80s, Tommy built a network of eclectic and outgoing friends in Mt. Pleasant. Anyone fortunate enough to have met him knew he could likely fix your car, lawnmower, or just about any home appliance he set his mind to. But no matter how he occupied his time (at any given point, he may have owned a comedy club, a sandwich shop, or a Mexican restaurant), Tommy was always a caring father, husband, and friend first. He never hesitated to help those who needed it, strangers included - in fact, he never met a stranger in his life.
In addition to his wife, Vicki Simmons Walker, he is survived by: two sons, Thomas Walker, Jr., of New York, New York, and Matthew Walker (Jessica) of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; a grandson, Wynn Walker; two brothers, William Walker (Amelia) of Lexington, South Carolina, and Cary Walker (Dina) of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Walker.
Memorials in Tommy’s name may be made to Hoofprints In the Sand (hoofprintsinthesand.org/donate) or to the Hospice & Palliative Care Foundation (hpcfoundation.org). Arrangements by the J. Henry Stuhr Mount Pleasant Chapel.
