Thomas "Tom" Charles Irwin, 83, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Ceal Thomas Irwin passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 31, 2016. A memorial mass will be held Friday, September 16, 2016 at Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church at 10:00 am. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
Tom was born January 18, 1933 in St. Albans, New York, son of the late Dr. George Allen Lyall Irwin and the late Monica Murphy Irwin. He graduated from St. John's Prep School in 1952 and Cornell University in 1955 with a BA degree in English. He joined IBM in Buffalo, NY as a sales trainee after graduation from college. After six months of IBM training, he entered the US Army as a training officer at an anti-aircraft school. Tom returned to IBM and after numerous promotions was elected as secretary of the IBM Corporation in 1986. He retired in 1987 after 32 years of service to IBM. He was an active member of Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. He was also an avid tennis player and artist.
He is survived by his wife, Cecelia Irwin of Mt. Pleasant, SC; children, Denise Robertson (David), Leslie Lawton (Glenn), Robin Irwin, Kerie Baty (Mark), and Will Brock; loving grandchildren include Kristina, Abigail, and Steven Marusic, Spencer T. and Lyall Irwin, Trey and Monica Robertson, and Matthew Baty. He is also survived by a brother, Dr. Gerald Irwin and sister, Nancy Yan Dorn. He was preceded in death by Dan Irwin, Kathleen Irwin and Lyall Irwin.
The family would like to thank his special caregiver, Ann Washington, for her loyal service during his illness.
