Thomas Peter Tanis, 74, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Sue Hopkins Tanis died Monday, May 2, 2016. His Funeral Service will be held Friday, May 6, 2016 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 3:00 pm. Interment will follow in Christ Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, May 6, 2016 at the Chapel from 1:00 pm to time of the service.
Tom was born April 5, 1942 in Paterson, New Jersey, son of the late Thomas Tanis and the late Harriet Titus Tanis. He graduated from Florida State University and served in the United States Marine Corps. He owned "The Scratch Pad" stationery shop in Mount Pleasant and served on Mt. Pleasant Town Council, Mt. Pleasant Planning Committee, Mt. Pleasant Recreation Committee and the Mt. Pleasant Waterworks Commission. Tom also served on the Board of Directors for the Hospice Center, Charleston Speech and Hearing Clinic and The Charleston County Mental Health Board. He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Sertoma Club and he especially enjoyed the friendships within his ROMEO lunch club. Tom will be remembered for his genuine dedication to improving our quality of life in the Mt. Pleasant community.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Tanis, son, Kirk Tanis; daughter, Sara Giannelli and her husband, Andy, two granddaughters, Caroline Tanis and Bailey Tanis all of Mt. Pleasant, SC; sister, Carol Blankenhorn and her husband, Bud, of Jupiter, FL., and lastly his granddog, Jasper.
