Thomas William Sommer, 68, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, husband of Julia Wells Sommer died Monday, September 25, 2017. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, October 14, 2017, at 1:00 pm in J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, with a reception immediately following the service. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Thomas was born May 18, 1949 in Columbus, Ohio, son of the late Robert Raebel Sommer and the late Mary Alyce Davis Sommer. A 1967 graduate of Grove City High School, Tom earned his bachelor's degree from Ohio University in 1971 where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. For the last 12 years Tom has been employed at Select Health of South Carolina as a Senior Account of Network Management. His prior career in health care included work at Pike County Hospital, Madison County Hospital, Doctor's Hospital, QualMed Plan for Health, and Maryland Physicians Care, where he was responsible for physician recruitment. Tom served on the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, the Grove City Library Board, and was a member of the Grove City Methodist Church. He was a 52 year member of the Barbershop Harmony Society and member of Barbershop International. He served as choral director and coach and in 1980 was named coach of the year for Johnny Appleseed District. He was a Big Brother for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America and had a profound impact on young lives. Tom was a Mason and member of Valley View Brotherhood of the International Shrine, and locally of Omar Shrine, Patriot's Point. Tom's passions were his family, cooking, barbershop, and Buckeye Football.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Julie; children, Tom Sommer (Meredith) and Rob Sommer (fiancée Erica Honshell) all of Louisville, KY; stepchildren, Troy Wells of Glendale, AZ and Brandi Smith (Nathan) of Galena, OH; five grandchildren, Ella and Maxwell Sommer, Riley and Lincoln Sommer, Logan Smith; three brothers, John Sommer, Robert Sommer, and Stevens Sommer all of Columbus, OH.
