Thomas Mark Mahan, 71, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Janet Geffert Mahan entered into eternal rest Sunday, November 6, 2022. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, November 18, 2022, in Christ Our King Catholic Church, 1149 Russell Drive at 10:00 am. The family will receive friends Thursday at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm where a rosary service will be held at 5:00 pm.
Tom was born June 18, 1951, in Sioux City, Iowa, son of the late Edward P. Mahan, Sr. and the late Marie E. Christopher Mahan. After graduating from Iowa State University, Tom worked as a Chemical Engineer and in many high-level managerial positions for Amoco Chemicals and then British Petroleum (BP). In 2005, he retired from BP. Tom embraced this major change in life by studying to be a Master Gardener. He took his new expertise down the road to Mepkin Abbey where he worked on endless beautification projects, and his yard was always the most beautiful in the neighborhood. Tom could be counted on to fix just about anything around the house, and patiently explained every project as he passed on his knowledge and skills. He was devoted to his Catholic faith and served in many roles in the church from an altar boy to a lector as an adult. Tom was a natural athlete and avid sports fan. He loved to actively participate and watch on television. He also loved great food, especially chocolate desserts, and regularly savored an ice-cold “brewski.” Tom’s favorite pastime was spending time with his large family, visiting and laughing with his wife, brothers, sisters, children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Janet; five children, Monica Paquette (Timothy) of DeKalb, IL, Sara Genez (Nathan) of Houston, TX, Martha Gibson (Heath) of Mount Pleasant, SC, Timothy Mahan (Angel) of Daniel Island, SC, and Maureen Marby (Richard) of Lee's Summit, MO; four siblings, Timothy Mahan (Carole) of Minneapolis, MN, Jeanne Flowers (Steve) of Gilbert, AZ, Michael Mahan (Karen) of Sioux Falls, SD, and Edward Mahan, Jr. (Tami) of Mount Pleasant, SC; fourteen grandchildren, Molly and William Paquette; Adam, Henry, Melanie and Charlotte Genez; Claire, Libby and Nora Gibson; Vivi, Charlie and Patrick Mahan; Kate and Lydia Marby; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Patsy Wehde.
