Thomas T. Johnston, Jr., 93, of Charleston, South Carolina, Tuesday, January 31, 2017. The family will receive friends Friday February 3, 2016 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m His Funeral Mass and Burial will be held later in St. Mary's Cemetery, Corinth, NY.

Thomas was born June 8, 1923 to Thomas T. Anna (Valouch) Johnston. He was the husband of Halyn Maliszewski, who predeceased him in death after 54 years of marriage. He was proud to have six children, Anne Cominsky (Jack) of Seaford, NY, Mary Vogel (Elton) of Charleston, SC, James Johnston (Martha ) of Colorado Springs, CO, William Johnston (Patrice) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Thomas Johnston (Teresa) of Charleston, SC, Edward Johnston (Linda) of Manhasset, NY, he proudly had nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Thomas grew up on Long Island, NY, prior to entering the military. He served three years in the US Army Air Corps with 11/2 years as a pilot in the European Theater of Operations. He was awarded the Air Medal and five Battle Stars. He was one of the few pilots selected to fly Nuremberg Investigators as they collected evidence for the trials, after WWII.

Tom married and started his family in Porter Corners, NY where he would continue to spend his summers. After graduating from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY. He obtained his MS in Industrial & Labor Relations from Cornell University from Cornell University, NY, and then an EdD from the University of Sarasota, FL.

While his wife raised their children he held positions of a Public Administration Intern for NY State, a Personnel Technician for the IRS in Newark, NJ, and the Federal Aviation Commission at the JFK Airport. He was employed by Nassau County, NY to administer a newly developed position classification system which then led him to be one of four persons to start the Nassau Community College. He served there for 25 years; starting as the first Dean of Administration and retiring as a professor.

After leaving New York he and his wife moved to Charleston, SC. He volunteered at the Bon-Secours St. Francis Hospital, white it was downtown and continued after they moved to their West Ashley location. He and his wife worked as volunteers with St. Joseph's Church on Raul Wallenberg, where he served on the parish council; he selected The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist as his parish of choice.
