Ted was born November 9, 1948 in Darlington, South Carolina, son of the late Kenneth L. Smith and Geraldine Carter Smith. He was a retired salesman for CC Dickson, a member of the Charleston Elks Lodge and a retired Sergeant First Class in the SC Army National Guard.
In his younger years Ted enjoyed playing softball for Coburg Dairy, on a co-ed league with his daughter Claire, James Island Baptist Church, and later on a senior league. He loved Clemson football, bowling, watching his grandson Teddy play baseball, cruising, road trips with close friends, and anything from "As Seen on TV". Ted enjoyed singing, shagging, fishing, and spending time with his family. He was known for making everyone laugh and kept a sense of humor despite his recent medical issues. Most of all Ted loved his family with a love stronger than most people are not lucky enough to experience.
His family would like to give special thanks to the staff at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, the MSICU team at Ashley River Tower and his Goddaughter Amanda Holseberg for taking such great care of him.
