Sybil Baker Russell

Sybil Baker Russell, 92, born November 1, 1931, traveled to Heaven Tuesday, March 5, 2024. Her Funeral Service will be held Friday, March 15, 2024 in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 3:00 pm. The family will receive friends an hour before the service. Interment will follow in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel.

A Beloved Wife, Mother and Grandmother.

Born in Williamsburg County, the daughter of late Herbert Henry Baker and late Irene Grace Baker, Sybil grew up on a farm working mostly around the house and farmyard helping her mother in the kitchen, cleaning the house , gardening, canning, feeding barn animals, and helping with the tobacco and cotton during harvest. She was Valedictorian of Hebron High School, Class of 1949 in SC, then she moved to Charleston, SC and graduated from Rice Business College. She enjoyed working for  SOUTHERN BELL Telephone in Charleston, NJ and FL. 

Sybil married the late USAF Major Benson M. Russell, Jr., August 30, 1957 and enjoyed 20 years as a USAF wife. The young family traveled to France and England, then back to be stationed at Charleston Air Force Base for 17 years until  Dad retired. After the military, she helped her husband owning and managing Dollar Rent A Car at CHS Airport, for ten years, using her excellent accounting and bookkeeping skills.

As a grandmother, she continued being a wonderful parent to her grandchildren. Since 1970s, the family enjoyed vacationing on Lake Moultrie and in 2003, they built the ‘MONTICELLO LAKEHOUSE” where she and dad enjoyed their retirement years, making many life long friends in the Overton subdivision. 

She attended church at Hebron Baptist, Brentwood Baptist, Bonneau Baptist and, most recently, with Waccamaw Christian Church, Conway,  SC.

She is survived by her brother, Raymond Baker (Jean) of Manning, SC; four children, Bethany Grace Lewis (Dennis) of Conway, SC, Kevin Lynne Russell of Conway, SC, Benson M. Russell III of Conway, SC and Joel Baker (Heather) Russell of Goose Creek, SC; 11 grandchildren, Randall Joel Robinson, Jordan Grace Rice, Dennis McLain Lewis II, Crystal Nicole Kopsic, Kristy McClain Causey, Kevin Lenny Purdy, Amber Elizabeth Schlenker, Benson M. Russell IV, Caitlin Leanne Russell, Noah Joel Russell,  and Judah David Russell; and 18 great grandchildren, Braxton Mark Rice, Brynn Grace Rice, Kaelynn Adriana Unpingco Lewis, Elena Grace Unpingco Lewis, Venetia Elizabeth Christopher Starvrinkas, Noah James Schlenker, Emerson Bridget Schlenker, Jada-Brynn Blizard, Benson M. Russell V, Everleigh Nicole Russell, Kyrie Levon Rowell, Arya Isobel Weaver, Kendal Brook Causey, Dustin Rodney Causey II, Daniela Isabel Amor Lewis, Gabriela Cristal Amor Lewis, Kylee Faith Kopsic, and Bryce Macon Kopsic.
