Suzanne Kunkel Gough

August 11, 1921 — June 4, 2011

Entered into eternal rest on June 4, 2011, Suzanne Kunkel Gough, widow of Maj. Gen, (USAF, Retired) Jamie Gough.  Sue was born on August 11, 1921, the elder daughter of Lt. Henry William Kunkel, US Army Air Corps, and Julia Tucker Kunkel, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois.  Her father was killed in a mid air collision when she was five years old.  Her mother moved to San Diego where Sue graduated from San Diego High School.  While attending the University of Arizona, she met Lt. Jamie Gough.  They were married in San Antonio, Texas, in 1941.  During her husband's 30 years of service in the Air Force, Sue made countless moves, always making them an adventure for her children.  She and Jamie eventually settled in Merecedes, Texas.  In 1999, they moved for the last time from Texas to Charleston, where they made their home in the newly-built apartment/cottage community at Bishop Gadsden.

A woman of style and grace, Sue was a consummate hostess, chef extraordinaire and loving mother.  She was received into the Episcopal Church when she married and faithfully served in many parishes throughout the United States and overseas.

She is survived by her sister, Adele Kunkel Singer, her children, Susan Gough Legare, Jamie Gough III, Scott Walter Gough and John William Gough.  She leaves ten grandchildren, Mary Kelly, Jamie IV, Christopher, Ben III, Emily, Kaykay, Julia, Kevin, Anna and Jenny and eight great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in The Chapel at Bishop Gadsden on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 2 pm.  Inurnment alongside her husband will follow at a later date at the United States Air Force Academy.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Guerry Endowment, Bishop Gadsden, 1 Bishop Gadsden Way, Charleston, SC 29412.
