Suzanne Hyer Donaldson

Suzanne Hyer Donaldson, 93, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Sunday, May 25, 2025. Her Funeral Service will be held graveside at 3:00 pm on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Christ Church Cemetery with a reception following at 205 Queen Street, Mt. Pleasant. Born March 21, 1932, in Lansing, MI, Suzanne was the daughter of the late Edward Allen Hyer and the late Helen von Kolnitz Hyer.

Suzanne, with her late husband Bobby, started Abide-A-While Nursery in 1957. In the early years, she planted hanging baskets, kept the books, and watered the greenhouse with a baby on her hip. Together, they built a family business that touched the hearts of countless employees and customers. Working side by side, Suzanne and Bobby shared their love of, and passion for, gardening; and helped others create beautiful gardens and yards. Their little business continues to be THE gardening destination in Mt. Pleasant.

Suzanne loved the mountains of western North Carolina and the family camped, hiked and played there for 50 years. She enjoyed her coffee in the crisp early morning at many a campsite in the Pisgah National Forest and, later, on the deck of her cabin near Brevard.

Suzanne was a member of St. Andrews Church for 75 years and a believer in the grace, peace and love of Jesus Christ. She had the gift of hospitality and welcomed all into her home. She made the best banana bread and gave it away to family, friends and neighbors. Suzanne served the church as a layreader and chalice bearer; participated in countless Bible Studies and Alpha courses; and sang in the choir and on the Praise Team. Her faith grew early as she got involved with the Faith Alive and Faith at Work programs. She attended Cursillo 8 in the Diocese of South Carolina and served on many other teams. Suzanne did domestic mission work, traveling to hurricane hit areas of Mississippi; and also international mission work traveling to Ukraine and Honduras. She spread the Gospel by loving people.

As a grandmother, Grammie was keenly interested in whatever stage of life her grandchildren were in. She always had a game, a puzzle or a craft to entertain the kids. Grammie measured the height of every grandchild, from toddler to adulthood, on a bedroom door, that continues to provide memories and conversation. She was a sweet lady.

Suzanne is survived by her three children, Robert James Donaldson III (Margaret), Bruce Lucas Donaldson (Muffie) and Andrew Homes Donaldson (Torre); and grandchildren, Robert (Rene), Thomas (Maddy) and Jenks Donaldson, Eleanor Moynahan (Colin) and Emma Harrell (Bo), Sarah Donaldson and Andrew Donaldson (Kenley), Megan Phillips (Adam) and Madison Bennett; and great grandchildren Legare, Helen, Townley, Henry and Lilibeth.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrews Church, 440 Whilden Street, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
