Susan Beery Spencer

Susan Beery Spencer, 73, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, wife of Col. James Inman Spencer (US Army, Ret) died Tuesday, August 20, 2013. The relatives and friends of Susan Spencer are invited to attend her Funeral Service on Saturday, August 24, 2013 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL at 10:00 am. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 23, 2013 in the Mount Pleasant Chapel from 5:00 until 7:00 pm.

Susan was born on September 12, 1939 in Madison, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Dr. Walter Clark Beery and the late Ruth Prose Beery of Lima, Ohio. She was raised in Lima, Ohio where she attended schools after World War II. She graduated from Shawnee High School in Lima, and Averett Jr. College in Danville, VA and attended UNC Women's College in Greensboro, NC. Susan was married to Col. James I. Spencer (US Army, Ret.) for nearly 52 years; was an active US Army wife for 28 years, living across the US and in the middle-east and France. She and her husband retired to Mt. Pleasant, SC in 1989 where she lived since that time.

Mrs. Spencer worked for the Historic Charleston Foundation, Weight Watchers and was a Docent at the Edmund Alston House having served as a volunteer for over 20 years. She was also active with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra League for over 20 years, serving on the Board for much of that time, as well as the Al Hambra Garden Club as a member for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Col. James "Bud" I. Spencer (US Army, Ret.) of Mount Pleasant, SC; two sons, James I. Spencer, Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of Springfield, VA and Charles Allan Spencer and his wife, Leann, of Wheeling, WV; four grandchildren, James III, Victoria, Bailey and Carolina. She leaves one sister, Mrs. Gretchen Cleaves of Centerville, OH; two brothers, Mr. David Beery of Chicago, IL and Mr. William Beery of Lima, OH and a step-mother, Mrs. Martha Beery of Lima, OH.
