Susann Steckler Hungerford, 81, passed away Saturday, January 27th, 2024, surrounded by her three daughters after a brave eight-month battle with Stage Four Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. She relocated from New Jersey four years earlier to be closer to her daughter, Kimberley, in Charleston. Susann was born in Syracuse, New York, to the late Dr. Philip P. Steckler and Elizabeth (Delduchetto) Steckler. Her sister, Carol Anne D’Avignon, predeceased her.
As she traversed the corridors of knowledge, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Syracuse University and a Master's in Education from Monmouth University, finding her lifelong passion for educating others as a Special Education teacher in Red Bank, New Jersey.
She will forever be remembered for her boundless energy, bestowed upon all who crossed her path. Her artistic gifts, from the delicate intricacies of crochet, an accomplished seamstress for her daughters and friends, and her pure enjoyment playing the piano and organ, were a testament to her creative spirit. Her love for all creatures, great and small, from her beloved dogs, cats, and exotic birds and reptiles, affectionately referred to as her "menagerie" by her children, and her green thumb was legendary, with her stunning geraniums and exceptional gardening, which reflected her passion for nature.
She will be lovingly remembered by her three daughters, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandson: Kristine Hungerford Ling (late husband, Ronald) and children, Ryan and Brenna; Karen Dundas (Michael), and children Christopher (Katie), Cameron, Nicholas, and great grandson, James; Kimberley Hungerford Meyer (Jeff), children Gabrielle (Ryan), and George.
A Memorial Service will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers and to honor Susann, her daughters request donations in Susann’s name to The Rapture Trust | The Center for Birds of Prey | 4719 Highway 17 North, Awendaw, SC 29429 | thecenterforbirdsofprey.org
