Stephen Lamar Phillips, Sr., 76, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Ann Worsham Phillips passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2014. The relatives and friends of Stephen Phillips, Sr. are invited to attend a Celebration of His Life on Saturday, January 25, 2013 at 12:00 pm at the J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road. Burial will be at a later date. The family will greet friends at the funeral chapel from 11:30 am until time of the service.
Lamar was born January 9, 1938 at Fort Moultrie Military Hospital on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, son of the late Daniel L. Phillips and Lucille Warren Phillips. Proud of his service to our nation, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy Seabees, and was a member of the local VFW. He attended First Baptist Church of Awendaw, and was a member of the East Cooper Outboard Motor Club (ECOMC) and the Masons. He retired from South Carolina Electric and Gas as a mechanic for their Fleet Maintenance Section. When time allowed, Lamar loved to piddle around outside and was known for his ability to repair just about anything. He never failed to reach out and help someone who needed help. He was also a gifted welder and enjoyed being out in the yard working on projects.
He is survived by wife of 50 years, Ann Phillips of Mount Pleasant, SC; his daughter, Cheryl P. Mitchum of Mount Pleasant, SC; his son, Dr. Stephen L. Phillips, Jr. and his wife, Debra of Winterville, NC; his brother, Walter O. Phillips of Ormond Beach, FL; and his six grandchildren, Patrick, Michael, Becca, Elijah, Jackson, and Lourdes. He was preceded in death by Cheryl's husband, Michael Mitchum.
