Stephen Elliott Puckette, Jr., M.D., 84, a longtime resident of Johns Island, South Carolina, husband of Catherine Jameson Puckette passed away peacefully on the morning of Sunday, January 29, 2017. His Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at St. John's Parish Church, 3673 Maybank Highway at 11:00 a.m. Interment, Churchyard. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street.
He was born August 17, 1932 in Columbia, SC, the son of the late Stephen Elliott Puckette and Clara Annie Childs Puckette. Dr. Puckette graduated from St. Paul's High School and the University of the South. He earned his medical degree from MUSC where he also did his residency in Radiology. He served on the staff of MUSC, Charleston County, Dorchester County, Roper, and Trident Hospitals and spent two years on active duty at the US Naval Hospital in Charleston. He was a founding partner of Charleston Radiologists in 1975 and served as the head of Radiology at Trident Hospital from 1975 until his retirement in 1997.
Dr. Puckette was a member of St. John's Parish Church where he served as a vestryman, senior warden, and treasurer. He served on the Boards of Camp St. Christopher and Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community and as a Trustee for the University of the South.
Dr. Puckette was a man with a deep, quiet faith. He worked hard and seldom complained. He was an enthusiastic sailor, fisherman, and historian. When asked by a grandchild for a favorite memory, he said "Raising five children in the lowcountry."
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Catherine Jameson Puckette; four children: Julia P. Baker (Jeff) of Columbia, M. Charlotte Puckette of Paris, France, Thomas C. Puckette (Libby) of Johns Island, and P. Trapier G. Puckette (Frances) of Johns Island; eleven grandchildren: Daniel E. Baker (Chelsea), Stephen E. Puckette, IV, Gervais L. Baker, Julia G. Puckette, Erin W. Puckette, D. Elliott Ohayon, Hugo X. Ohayon, Clara A.C. Ohayon, Caroline P. Puckette, Elizabeth C. Puckette, P. Trapier G. Puckette, Jr.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Julia Gervais Puckette and a son, Stephen E. Puckette, III.
