Stephen Allan Hawkins, 83, of Johns Island, SC, formerly of Kiawah Island, SC and Wilbraham, MA, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, September 3, 2024. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel.
Mr. Hawkins attended Huntington Prep School in Boston in 1959 and won honors in economics and chemistry. He then entered Babson College where he graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration degree in 1963. He married Diane Hardy in 1961.
Upon graduation, Mr. Hawkins was employed by the Mass Mutual Life Insurance company of Springfield, MA. He earned his Chartered Life Underwriting and a Fellow in the Life Management Institute. He self taught himself golf and became a single digit handicapper and member of the hole-in-one club. He captained the company's AAA golf team in the Springfield Industrial League, winning four consecutive city championships. He was Club Champion in the first division of the Orchard's Golf Club and later Club Champion of the Governors Club on Kiawah island, SC.
He had two children, Deborah Ann Hawkins in 1963 and Stephen Allan Hawkins Jr. in 1967.
Mr. Hawkins married his second wife, Martha Hall of Wilbraham, MA in 1983.
Mr. Hawkins rose to title of Senior Vice President and Executive Officer as one of the youngest in company's history. He was responsible for all Systems Development for the entire company and also the Client Services Department of the Individual Product Line. He took early retirement in 1996. Mr. Hawkins was enticed out of retirement to head up Systems Development with Andersen Consulting, now Accenture, at the Australian Mutual Provident Society in Sydney Australia.
Mr. Hawkins leaves behind his beloved and best friend, Martha; daughter, Deborah; very special granddaughter, Samantha Rose Hawkins; brother, Thomas William Hawkins Jr.; and nephews, Thomas William Hawkins, III (Julie), Mark Hawkins (Betheny), and their children. He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Jr.
Memorial donations can be made in Mr. Hawkins' memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation or to the Wounded Warrior Project.
