Stephen McClure Carney, 90, husband of June Kempf Carney of Mt. Pleasant, SC passed away on Tuesday, July 3, 2012. All Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
Mr. Carney was born on November 22, 1921 in Elk Garden, West Virginia, son of the late Stephen Carney and Hannah Williams. He received his under graduate degree from West Virginia University in 1942. He also earned an advanced degree in Political Science from the University of Geneva in 1950 and a Master's Degree in Latin American Studies from American University on 1965. Steve served as a Foreign Service Information Officer, Vice Consul, and Consul for the State Department and the United States Information Agency, where he concentrated on cultural affairs. During his career, he was assigned to nine different posts in Latin America and Europe and also acted as Desk Officer for France, Spain and Portugal. Steve enlisted in the United States Army after Pearl Harbor and served with the 95th Infantry Division (the Iron Men of Metz) in the European Theatre as a sergeant until the end of World War II. In 2009 he was named a Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur by the French government in honor of his military and diplomatic service.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, June K. Carney of Mt. Pleasant, SC; five children, Stephen P. Carney of Cockeysville, MD, Madeleine C. Collins of McHenry, MD, Kevin M. Carney of Jefferson, ME, Heath J. Carney of Antelope, CA and Brian L. Carney of Charlotte, NC; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
