Stanley Gerald Roat, 90, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Susan Bodenheimer Roat entered into eternal rest Monday, January 29, 2024. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Stanley was born January 27, 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio, son of the late Stanley Roat and Dorothy Block Roat. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1956 and received his Master of Divinity in 1961 from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, IL. Stanley joined the U.S. Army in 1964, serving as an Army Chaplin during four campaigns in Vietnam and seven years in Germany. In 1972, he attended the Long Island University where he studied Clinical Pastoral Counseling along with Marriage and Family Therapy. After retiring as a U.S. Army Chaplain in 1984 and receiving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Stanley became the Director of Pastoral Care Associates from 1984-2014 in Augusta, GA. He was a licensed Professional Counselor, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, a Member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Counselors and a Diplomate American Association of Pastoral Counselors.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Susan, and his children: Scott Roat of Mendocino, CA; Todd Roat (Trisha) of Cincinnati, OH; Ann Roat of Marietta, GA; and Reid Schuster of Athens, GA along with his grandchildren Miles Roat, Denver Roat, Skyler Roat all of Cincinnati. Family and loved ones remember Stanley fondly as a compassionate listener, Scout Master, Rotarian, passionate reader and thinker who could perfectly deliver a one liner and strove for personal authenticity.
