Roger was born November 13, 1930 in Nouméa, New Caledonia, son of the late Jules Schoer and Raymondé Betfort Schoer. Roger came to America when he was 17 years old and became a citizen on Dec 7, 1953. He joined and served in the United States Air Force on July 1, 1951. Roger was stationed in Charleston where he met and married the love of his life, Judith Simmons. They were happily married for over 42 years. While in the US Air Force, he served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and was a recipient of the Air Force Commendation Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal Bronze. He loved and respected the United States and the Air Force. He was proud to serve. He retired after serving 25 years and was Honorably discharged in 1974. Roger was an educated man, he earned a Bachelor's degree from his homeland and he also received his Engineering Associate's Degree from Trident Technical College. Roger worked at MUSC in the Oncology Department for over 20 years, until his retirement. He was a member of Dorchester Lodge #369, A.F.M., Pythagorean 21, Omar Shrine Temple, and the Elks Lodge.
Roger loved life, a good party and he liked to have fun. He danced every weekend with his wife Judith, and they celebrated every holiday with gusto!! He loved to be outside, play golf, horse shoes and other outdoor activities. He was a carpenter, he could fix anything! He built most of the house he lived in for nearly 60 years, and also grew a vegetable garden every year for nearly 40 years. And he made the very best Lasagna - oh, it was so good! Roger loved being in or near the water, the ocean, the beach, the lake or river. He fished and boated. His favorite food was seafood. He used to dig up his own oysters and clams. He really liked to travel with both Judith and later his girlfriend, Rosie. Rosie and Roger traveled several times a year and went on several cruises. He was stern, you knew when he meant business. But he was so loving, too. He adored his wife, Judith, and his girls, Monette and Michelle, we all knew it! He was also very proud of his grandsons. He loved our family gatherings when the grandkids would come to see him.
Whether you called him Roger, Daddy, Papa or Frenchy, he left an impression. One of a fun - outgoing - intelligence and those dimples!! He will definitely be missed!!
He is survived by his three daughters: Monette S. Dearing (Greg) of Summerville, SC, Michelle S. Bridges (David) of Charleston, SC, and Denise Murray of Atlanta, GA; two sons: Norman Schoer of Atlanta, GA, and Mark Steven Brantley of Charleston, SC; sister, Monette Betfort of New Caledonia; seven grandchildren: Steven Brantley, Christopher Dearing, Ryon Dearing, Timothy Dearing, Travis Dearing, Aaron Bridges, and Ethan Bridges; and Special Companion, Rose Mary Wolff of North Charleston, SC.
