Sister (Clara Ann) Slaughter Nichols-Jones, 75, of Johns Island and formerly of Mt. Pleasant, died of natural causes on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016. Born July 15, 1941 in Mullins, SC, Sister was the daughter of the late John Graves Slaughter and Ellen Cox Smith Slaughter. She was married to Nick Nichols on Dec 12, 1965, who died on Oct. 26, 1994. She then married Edwin Jones on July 15, 2001, who died on Oct 21, 2008.
She attended Mullins High School and Brenau College, was a business owner of Nick's Texaco in Mt Pleasant for many years. She was heavily involved in her church and in her community. She spent many years contributing to the lives of many young men and women working with the youth group at Hibben United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant, serving as a substitute teacher throughout Charleston County, and she was like a 2nd Mom to many. This was especially true for the girls who were part of her Girl Scout Troops…she loved you all.
Sister received many accolades and honors through her life; including being given keys to this town from the Mayor of Mt Pleasant many years ago, having a day designated as Sister Nichols Day (May 23, 1988) by the town, numerous recognitions and awards from GSUSA, etc., but she was most proud of her girls, and her grandchildren.
She is survived by two daughters: Scarlett Nichols Ritenour and her husband, Michael Ritenour, Jr., of Ladson, SC, and Melissa Nichols Floyd of Johns Island, SC; two step-sons: Wil "Butch" Nichols and his wife, JoAnn Nichols, of Kingman, AR, and Ken Nichols and his wife, Terry Nichols, of Virginia Beach, VA; eight grandchildren: Matthew Nichols, Deborah Colleen Nichols-White, Caroline Nelson-Nichols, Chris Nichols, Hannah Ritenour, Nick Ritenour, Bella Floyd, and Timothy Floyd; one great-grandchild, James Nichols; and two brothers, Johnnie Slaughter of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Gary Slaughter of Johns Island, SC.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 7th, from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm. A memorial service will be on Thursday, September 8th, at 11:00 am; both will be held at J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Mt Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road.
