Sidney W. Stubbs, Jr., 87, of Mount Pleasant, SC, passed away on Wednesday March 29, 2023. Mr. Stubbs was born in Sumter, SC, September 24, 1935, the son of Sidney Wilbur Stubbs and Mildred Markey Stubbs.
He received a Bachelor of Architecture Degree from Clemson University in 1959, a Master of Architecture Degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1961 and completed Continuing Education at the Harvard University School of Design.
A respected leader both in the Charleston regional community and in the field of architecture in South Carolina, Mr. Stubbs co-founded Lucas & Stubbs, Ltd. in 1964. The firm won the design competition for the original Gaillard Municipal Auditorium, launching its growth to eventually become the regional firm LS3P, in which Mr. Stubbs served as President and C.E.O. He directed numerous other design award winning projects including the Citadel's Deas Hall, the College of Charleston’s Albert Simons Center for the Arts, the Blue Cross Blue Shield Tower and the Santee Cooper Headquarters Complex. In 1990 he co-founded Stubbs Muldrow Herin Architects (SMHa), further working on several projects such as the Blackbaud Headquarters on Daniel Island. Mr. Stubbs served as president of AIA/SC (American Institute of Architects, South Carolina) and was awarded their highest honor, the AlA/SC Medal of Distinction.
Within the community, Sidney, along with partner Frank Lucas, rehabilitated the dilapidated Charleston city Public Market, establishing the Market Street corridor as a key central business district. He served as president of the Historic Charleston Foundation, chaired the city’s effort to develop the Charleston Waterfront Park, and helped establish the Commercial Design Review Committee in Mount Pleasant. He also served on Clemson University’s Board of Visitors, chaired the Charleston YMCA, the Mount Pleasant Scholarship Fund, the Town of Mount Pleasant Planning and Zoning Board, was vice president of the Charleston Chamber of Commerce and senior warden of Saint Andrews Episcopal Church.
From the time when his children were young, Mr. Stubbs and his family enjoyed traveling abroad, sailing, boating and hunting on weekends. Mr. Stubbs was an active pilot and a member of AOPA.
He was preceded in death by his high school sweetheart and wife of fifty-seven years, Patricia Stubbs. Sidney is survived by his daughter, Eve (Gayle) Smither of Mount Pleasant; his sons Markey (Shane Walters) Stubbs of Columbia and Gable Stubbs of Charleston; nephew John (Tammy) Woodall; grandsons Allston (Lindsey Hagwood) Smither and Banks (Evie Smith) Smither; granddaughters Sidney Stubbs and Wesley Stubbs; and great-grandchildren Ollis Smither and Beatrix Smither.
Funeral services will be graveside at Christ Episcopal Church cemetery, 2304 N Hwy 17, Mount Pleasant, SC at 10AM on Wednesday April 5, 2023. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mt. Pleasant Chapel.
