Shirley Kay Cochrane McKay, 55, wife of Daniel E. McKay of Mt. Pleasant, SC passed away on June 17, 2012. The relatives and friends of Shirley McKay are invited to attend her Memorial Celebration on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 in the First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends at J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 from 6:00 until 8:00 pm.
Shirley was born on February 8, 1957 in Groton, Connecticut, daughter of Colvin Russell Cochrane and Shirley Joyce Lake Cochrane. She grew up on the Isle of Palms and graduated from Wando High School, class of 1975. After Shirley graduated she joined the family business, Isle of Palms Hardware Store and later became the owner and operator of Isle of Palms Pest Control, now, East Coast Pest Management Company and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Shirley faithfully attended Stella Maris Catholic Church for many years with her husband, Danny.
Shirley enjoyed traveling with her family and friends and would always find time during those trips to shop which was something she loved doing. Holidays were spent at her "River House" on the Black River, and the memories that were made will live on forever. In her most recent years, her passion was entertaining her grandchildren. Shirley will leave behind many legacies that her family and friends will cherish.
She is survived by her husband of 19 years, Daniel E. McKay of Mt. Pleasant, SC; her parents, Colvin and Shirley Cochrane of Mt. Pleasant, SC; children, Julian Reed Simmons, IV and his wife, Jennifer of Hanahan, SC, Russell Vance Simmons of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Shirley Elizabeth Simmons and her fiancé, Doug McDonald, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Sheri Ann McKay Johnson and her husband, Jeremy, of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Kadi Artimisha Quinn and her husband, Christopher, of Mt. Pleasant; three grandchildren, Julian Reed Simmons, V, Juno Elizabeth Simmons, and Brantley Phelps Quinn; siblings, Sharon C. Sottile and her husband, Vincent, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Sherrill Almes Hirsch and her husband, Thomas, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Calvin C. Cochrane of Savannah, GA and Clyde R. Cochrane and his wife, Renee, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, nieces and nephews and a large extended family.
The family would like to give their heartfelt gratitude to the entire oncology team and the nurses, doctors and staff who cared for Shirley during her illness at MUSC.
