Sherry Lee Guffin Mitchum, 62, of Charleston, South Carolina passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 23, 2019 after a long battle with cancer. Her Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, April 27, 2019 in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street at 12:00 p.m. The family will receive friends Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service in the Downtown Chapel with a reception following the service.
Sherry was born March 16, 1957 in Okaloosa County, Florida, daughter of Joyce Pearl Massalon Guffin and the late William Clyde Guffin, Sr. She worked for the Charleston County School District in transportation and then at Fort Johnson Middle School as a front office clerk. Sherry enjoyed her contact with the faculty, students and parents. She also worked in food and beverage at Waffle House and enjoyed getting to know all of her coworkers and customers. Sherry had a heart of gold and will be sadly missed by all that loved her. She was a member of the WAC, Women's Army Corps, 1st Class as a Telecommunications Specialist. She was a member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church on James Island.
She is survived by her daughter, Amy Guffin Smith; brother, William "Chip" Guffin, Jr. (Missy); nephew, William Taylor Guffin; sister, Angela G. Rabon (JE); granddaughters: Delayna and Breeana; and her beloved dog, Niko; extended grandhildren; several aunts and uncles and numerous cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ralph H. Johnson Patriot's Harbor Palliative Care Unit in honor of Sherry, 109 Bee Street, Charleston, SC 29403 or a charity of your choice.
