Sheran Joy Bebergal Goldberg Rittenberg, 75, of Charleston, South Carolina, wife of Gerald M. Rittenberg, M.D. passed away at her home on Friday, December 28, 2018. Her graveside service will be held Monday, December 31, 2018 in Brith Sholom Beth Israel Cemetery (Maryville), Sycamore Avenue at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Sheran was born January 25, 1943, in Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of the late Hyman Bebergal and Lilly Zalkin Bebergal. Sheran graduated from Charleston High and attended the University of Miami. After leaving Miami, she returned to Charleston and worked at MUSC. In 1966, she married I.M. Goldberg, an attorney, and together they raised two daughters, Paige and Julie, until I.M.'s untimely death in 1979.
Forever tugging at Sheran was her desire to finish college. So while raising her two young girls on her own, she returned to school and graduated from the Baptist College of Charleston. She worked at Charleston's Guardian Ad Litem program, and also, volunteered to assist Russian immigrants in assimilating into the Charleston community in the 1980's. She later met and married Dr. Gerald Rittenberg in 1986.
Sheran loved her hometown of Charleston, where she spent her entire life. She was a member of Synagogue Emanu-El, Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue, and Hadassah. She especially loved summers with her extended family at the family beach house on Sullivan's Island. Sheran was a warm, compassionate and generous person. She was an intensely loving wife, mother, sister, mother-in-law and grandmother. Her greatest pride and joy was her family. She will be deeply missed by many, particularly a score of lifelong friends and her adoring family.
She is survived by her husband, Gerald; two daughters: Paige Goldberg Tolmach (Matt) of Los Angeles, CA and Julie Goldberg Hellman (Brian) of Sullivan's Island, SC; sister, Carol B. Baker (Barry) of Charleston, SC; brother, A. Buddy Bebergal of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and two grandchildren: Mia Hellman and Jackson Tolmach.
At the family's request, memorials may be made to Respite Care Charleston, 1605 Harbor View Road, Charleston, SC 29412.
