Sheila Hinson Butler, 87, widow of Herbert J. Butler, passed away Saturday, July 13th, 2024. A service will be held at 2:00 on Wednesday, July 17th at Prince George Winyah Parish Church, 300 Broad Street, Georgetown, SC. The family will receive friends at J. Henry Stuhr Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC from 4:00 to 6:00 on Tuesday, July 16th.
The daughter of Minnie Stanley and Ferdinand Hinson, Sheila was born September 29,1936 in Chadbourn, NC. She was a cheerleader for the Chadbourn High School Panthers, a member of the Seven Sentimentalists singing group, and the Strawberry Festival Queen. She graduated from Palmer College.
Predeceased by her parents, husband, sister Geraldine Hinson Ward and son Charlton Lane Butler, Sheila is survived by her sons Herbert Joseph Butler, Jr. (Helen) and Barre McLeod Butler (Fran); six grandchildren, Herbert J. Butler III (Destiny), Frances Butler Gorrell (Rob), Frances Lee Butler Bressan (John), William Barre McLeod Butler, Charlton Lane Butler, Jr. (Amber), and Edward Fraser Butler (Brooke); and seven great-grandchildren. The family would like to express their gratitude to two special friends and “chosen family” members, Jean Johnson and Stan Eliot, and also to Sheila’s additional caregivers, Linda Shaw, Gloria Williams, Brittany Simpson, and Virginia Dais.
Sheila was an active community member, serving as President of the Garden Club of Charleston, board member of the Charleston Museum, a lifetime member of the Ladies Benevolent Society, hostess of tours in her home on Church Street and later at the Oaks Plantation, and President of the institution she and her husband continued, J.J.W. Luden and company. She loved God’s creatures and nurtured countless animals throughout her lifetime. First and foremost, however, she was a beloved matriarch, known lovingly to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as ”She She.”
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Prince George Winyah Parish Church, the Charleston Animal Society, or the charity of one’s choice.
