Sergeant First Class David Elbert Smith, USA (Ret.) 83, of Ladson, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 8, 2016, listening to the music of Frank Sinatra. His funeral service will be held at a later date at the Ft. Myer Chapel, Arlington, Virginia, with burial following in Arlington National Military Cemetery.
David was born on May 1, 1933 in Creston, West Virginia, son of the late Harley B. Smith and Ethel Criss Smith. He was preceded in death by siblings Genevieve, Dorothy, Harold, Lewis and Ray. Surviving brothers are Harley Jr., Jerry and John. David is survived by his wife Edda of Parkersburg, WV, daughters Angela Koucheravy (Rich) of Fairfax, VA and Stephanie Kyle of Columbus, OH and five grandchildren: Daniel Koucheravy, Sarah Koucheravy, Amanda Kyle, Steven Kyle and Ian Kyle. David was proud of his military service with the U.S. Army, serving 2 tours in Vietnam. His service took him around the world to countries including Italy, Japan, Morocco, Ethiopia, and Germany.
Memorial donations may be made in his name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
