Selma "Smiley" Goerlich Putman, 85, of Charleston, South Carolina, formerly of Toledo, OH and Kiawah Island, SC wife of Paul "Put" Putman died Tuesday, August 4, 2015. Funeral Services will be held Friday, August 7, 2015 in The Chapel at Bishop Gadsden, 1 Bishop Gadsden Way at 4:00 p.m. Entombment services will be held at a later date. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

Smiley was born November 1, 1929 in Toledo, Ohio, daughter of the late John E. Goerlich and Selma Seaman Goerlich. She attended Northwestern University. Her passions included mental health, reading, community service, and her family. She was actively involved in the Junior League in Toledo, OH, Saint Vincent's Hospital, Toledo, OH, The Menninger Foundation, Topeka, KS, the Goerlich Center for Alzheimer's, the MUSC Senior Mentor Program, and The Community Garden at Bishop Gadsden.

She is survived by her daughters: Andrea Reams of Toledo, OH; Sheri Conway of Grosse Pointe, MI; Kelley Putman of Iowa City, IA; special niece, Wendy Kalil of Rye, NH; sister, Sandrea Alexander of Temperance, MI; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bishop Gadsden Residents Assistance Fund, 1 Bishop Gadsden Way, Charleston, SC 29412 and/or the ProMedica Goerlich Center, Flower Hospital, 5320 Harroun Road, Sylvania, Ohio 43560.
