Selma Hoxenhorn Levy

September 19, 1923 — April 11, 2011

Selma Hoxenhorn was born on September 19, 1923 into the Silversmith family.  She grew up on the lower East Side of Manhattan, with her five sisters and two brothers. Her father, Isidore, was a baker.  Her mother, Anna, was a homemaker who was incredibly proud of learning enough English to be able to go to the bank.

Selma was a hard-working woman all her life. From bagging popsicles in a Popsicle factory, to becoming a master knitter who made sample garments for yarn store windows, she exceeded the expectations of every employer.  During World War II she was a forewoman in a knitting mill.  After the war she met and married Irving Hoxenhorn. Her proudest accomplishment was giving birth and raising her twins, Sharon and Martin. Through her long life, she always proclaimed that she had the best children in the world.

Selma was actively involved in her synagogue, Bell Park Jewish Center in Queens, NY, and was honored by their Sisterhood for her volunteer work.  She worked on behalf of B'nai B'rith, and after becoming a snowbird, ran an annual fundraiser for an Alzheimer's Center in Deerfield Beach, Florida. She loved games and gambling and was licensed by the City of New York as a Bingo Caller.  To the end of her life, she still relished playing bingo and cards.

After her husband Irving died, Selma married David Levy, who became her constant companion, especially during the snowbird years of winters in Florida and summers in Queens.  Selma and Dave moved to Mt. Pleasant in 2006; Dave passed away in 2009.

Selma was a cancer survivor, having endured breast cancer at the age of 40 and ovarian cancer at 83. The third occurrence of cancer finally took this brave woman, who never complained, to her final resting place.  She died on Monday, April 11, 2011; she will be buried in New York.

Arrangements in New York by PARKSIDE MEMORIAL CHAPELS, Forest Hills, New York. Selma never complained - not about hard work, illness, or troubles in her life. She was always perplexed at having so many friends, and wondered why people liked her.  It was easy - because she was loveable.  She always had a smile for everyone.  She was kind hearted.  She loved her family.  In fact, when asked how she would like to be remembered she said "Always be good to your mother." We will miss you Mom.

Selma is survived by her sister, Zelda Chester of Queens Village, NY and Sunrise, FL, and her children, Sharon Hox and Martin Hoxenhorn, both residing in Mt. Pleasant. Donations to benefit medical research may be made in Selma's honor to Hadassah, 4004 Alpheretta Court, Charleston, SC  29414.
