Selby Toporek, 79, of Chicago, Illinois, entered into eternal rest Sunday, February 28, 2021. Her private funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 3, 2021 in Brith Sholom Cemetery (Magnolia). Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

Selby was born March 23, 1941 in Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of the late Samuel Irving Toporek and Jeanette Solomon Toporek. Selby was a graduate of Rivers High School in Charleston, and later in life obtained a Degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. In her professional life, Selby was a successful copy editor and writer who helped build communications to promote products and services of numerous nonprofit and for-profit businesses. She was an expert at managing the creative aspects of marketing and in developing organizations' brands. The impact of her career is magnified through her work over time with large national organizations.
Prior to moving to Chicago in 1972 Selby was a public relations officer at Tufts University Hospital in Boston. Over a period of 22 years in Chicago she was a communications specialist at the American Hospital Association and the American Medical Association and publications manager at Michael Reese Hospital. Subsequently, Selby was an editorial consultant to Chicago advertising and marketing firms for 13 years.
Among many accomplishments, in 1990 Selby received a commendation from the Visiting Nurse Association for her role as Centennial Director for the group's 100th anniversary. Later she was named the marketing team lead at the AMA for a $52 million stop-smoking campaign sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
Selby is survived by two brothers: Haskell Toporek (Dale) of Augusta, GA and Elliot Toporek of San Francisco, CA; four nieces and nephews: Seth Toporek (Natalie) of Atlanta, GA, Jeri Toporek Moskovitz (Mitch) of Memphis, TN, Ashley Toporek Woodman (Roger) of Atlanta, GA, and Evan Toporek (Lisa) of Atlanta, GA; along with numerous cousins; her Aunt, Rita Solomon; and many devoted friends from the Chicago area.
