Scott Douglas Corkern passed away peacefully Friday, August 4, 2023. He was only 61 years old but he lived big and loved even bigger.
Scott was fortunate to have the unique experience of growing up in Sea Pines during its early days. He roamed free on the Island, as most kids did then, and enjoyed finding snakes in the woods and blackberry patches. He had an incredible IQ and an amazing thirst for knowledge. His Sea Pines Academy teachers would have to eventually write an advanced math and science curriculum for him when he had completed everything they had. Graduating from Clemson University, Scott was an award-winning registered architect of custom homes and commercial structures who pioneered the first computer aided design architectural services on Hilton Head.
Art and architecture were his passions. He painted, sketched, created aluminum sculptures, toured with his Spo-it's bandmates and was on the Jerry Springer Show for kicks! He travelled the world enjoying befriending locals by sketching them and receiving invitations to their homes to experience their culture and cuisine.
He is survived by his father, Doug Corkern, siblings Coby Mozingo (Bobby) and Christopher Corkern (Adelaide) and his loving nieces and nephews whom he adored, Savannah (Ryan Kane), West & Parker Mozingo and Claire & Clay Corkern. He is predeceased by his mother, Jean Corkern. He also leaves behind his canine companion GiGi as well as friends he considered family including The Spo-it's and his dear friend, Matt.
A gathering to share stories and honor the self-proclaimed "King Spo-it" will take place on Saturday, August 26 at 11:00 a.m. at 40 Lawrence Street, Bluffton, SC. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mt. Pleasant Chapel.
Donations in Scott's memory can be made to Hilton Head Humane Society (www.hhhumane.org) or Bluffton Self Help (www.blufftonselfhelp.org).
