Saul Berry

Saul Berry, 79, affectionately known to many as "Mr. Kahn" peacefully passed away at his home on Saturday morning after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was the only child of the late Daisy S. Berry Abramson and the late Max Berry. Born January 2, 1931 in Columbia, SC., he moved to Charleston at the age of 10 where he lived with his mother, step father and half brother and half sister. Saul graduated in 1950 from the High School of Charleston and served in the Air Force for a short time before returning to Charleston to run Jasper's Groceries with his mother for the next 12 years from 1953-1965.  He then operated Robert Kahn Wholesale Grocers with his mother and sons for 44 years from 1965-2009 when he retired.  He was a lifetime member of the Elk's and a member of B.S.B.I. Synagogue.


He is survived by his wife, Jane Parkman, of the home, three sons; Michael S. (Denise), Jeffery N., Martin K. (Renee) of Charleston, a daughter Sharon Berry Rudd of Boca Raton, FL. a sister, Myra A. Mayer of Charleston, a brother Murray S. Abramson of Williamston, SC, twelve grandchildren, and one great granddaughter and his beloved cats, Lucy and Silver.


Funeral services will be held Monday at three o'clock at the graveside, Brith Sholom Beth Israel Cemetery, "Maryville" on Sycamore Ave.
