Sarah Ione Sanders

Sarah Ione Sanders, 83, of Goat Island, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Friday, July 5, 2024. A private service will be held. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel. 

Sarah was born February 26, 1941 in Erving, Massachusetts, daughter of the late William Grady Sanders and Arthada Ione Hall Sanders. She was a graduate of Winthrop College, and earned a masters degree from Southern Illinois University. She was a much loved and revered PE teacher and coach for 33 years, beginning at Moultrie Middle School in Mt. Pleasant, and later at Wando High School. She taught for four years in Illinois, while pursuing a doctoral degree at Western Illinois University. 

Sarah's decorated coaching career at Wando High School included basketball, track, and cross country, leading her teams to numerous winning seasons, and four state championships. Sarah also served as a volleyball official, and was a talented woodcrafter, known for her signature Goat Island Treasure Boxes. 

She is survived by longtime friend, Jane Johnson; brother, Travis Lamar Sanders (Jacqulyn) of Seminole, FL; and sister, Mary Catherine Steinhauer of Stockton, CA. She was preceded in death by her brother, Melvin Grady Sanders.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Charleston Animal Society, 2455 Remount Road, North Charleston, SC 29406.
