Sarah Isabel Fulton Jenkins

April 25, 1919 — October 25, 2010

Sarah Isabel Fulton Jenkins, 91 entered into eternal rest on October 25, 2010 with her family by her side. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Jenkins, Jr. are invited to attend the funeral services of the latter, Thursday October 28, 2010 in The Cathedral Church of St. Luke & St. Paul at 11 am. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends Wednesday in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL between 5 - 7pm.


Mrs. Jenkins was born April 25, 1919 in Clarendon County, S.C. She was the daughter of the late Charles Milton Fulton and Genevieve Myers Fulton.  Mrs. Jenkins graduated from Memminger High School for young woman and attended the College of Charleston and was a member of the Alumni Association.  She later graduated from Stokes Business College. She retired from the U.S. Coast Guard in 1986 where she worked for 28 years as the Secretary to the Captain of the Port. Prior to her secretarial duties at the U.S. Coast Guard, Mrs. Jenkins served as secretary to the Provost Marshall Security office at the Charleston Air Force Base, as well as secretary to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Charleston District and the U.S. Naval Supply Center. Before entering federal services, she worked as secretary at Todd Shipyards and secretary to the President of Charleston Shipyards, now known as The Charleston Ship Building and Dry-dock Company. She was a Charter member of the International Professional Secretaries Association.


Mrs. Jenkins served as President for four years of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #179, Low Country Chapter of American Ex POW's, National Federation of Republican Women, Sea Island Republican Women's Club and a member of the SC Historical Society. She was a member of several fraternal organizations where she served as musician; Betsy Ross Chapter #189 OES, Milcah Temple #77 Daughters of the Nile, and Palmetto Court #1 Order of the Amaranth. She was a member of the Omar Shrine Temple Distaffs.


Mrs. Jenkins was a member of Brewington Presbyterian Church Cemetery Association, Manning SC. She was a faithful member of The Cathedral Church of St. Luke & St. Paul, where she served in Episcopal Church Women (Saint Mary's Chapter).


She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Ernest R. Jenkins of the home. A son, Ernest R. Jenkins, III (Sandra Bullock) and a daughter, Sarah J. Johnson (Roger Hare) all of Charleston, SC. Two grandchildren: William Benjamin Fleming and Christopher N. Sean Johnson, Jr. (Michelle). Two great grandchildren: Emma Anne Johnson and Neil Raymond Johnson, all of Charleston, SC.  Sarah is preceded in death by two daughters, Anita Jenkins and Genevieve Elizabeth Jenkins.
