Sarah "Sallie" Baatz Boothroyd

February 3, 1938 — August 28, 2021

Sarah (Sallie) Baatz Boothroyd of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina passed away peacefully at Roper Hospice Cottage on August 28, at the age of 83, surrounded by her loving family.

Sallie was born February 3, 1938 in Massillon, OH to Margaret Winters and Christian Mark Baatz. She was one of six children.

Sallie attended Edinboro State Teachers College in Pennsylvania where she obtained a B.A. in art education. She taught art at St. Eugene's Catholic School, Asheville, North Carolina and was an active community volunteer, making a difference supporting the Boys Scouts, Girl Scouts, and through her work as a braille transcriber.

Sallie met her husband in 1958 during summer school at Penn State University and it was love at first sight. They were married in 1961 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sharon, Pennsylvania. Sallie was a devoted wife and mother of four, and is remembered for her kind nature and joyful spirit, love of puzzles, making people laugh, and her ability to beat everyone at cards. Sallie had a rare gift of turning strangers into friends and left a lasting impact on so many.

Sallie is survived by her husband of 60 years, Edwin Boothroyd, her two daughters, Barbara McClendon (Brent) of Charleston, Emily Boothroyd (Wolfgang) of Aalen, Germany, two granddaughters, Erin McClendon of Charleston and Sarah Grimm of Aalen, Germany, and three sisters, Margaret Parker of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Rita Hannigan of Westfield, Massachusetts, and Barbara Davies of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. She leaves behind many close and long-time friends in Asheville, North Carolina, Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Sallie is predeceased by her two sons, Michael Boothroyd and Christopher Boothroyd, and brother Tommy Baatz, and sister Patty Vandergrift.

A memorial service to celebrate her life is pending. The Rite of Committal will take place in Lewis Memorial Park, Asheville, North Carolina, in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains.

In lieu of flowers, please smile and say hello to a stranger, do something nice for a neighbor, and make someone laugh today. You may also consider a memorial contribution to the charity of your choice.
