Sara S. Powell

Mrs. Sara S. (Pete) Powell died on Tuesday, May 31, 2011.  She was born in Athens, GA on August 9, 1923, daughter of Evelyn Gunnels Kempson and Alvin A. Kempson.  She was the wife of Thomas G. (Joe) Powell who preceded her in death on February 13, 1987.


Mrs. Powell was a buyer of MRO supplies for R.M. Engineered Products, Inc. and a member of The National Association of Purchasing Management.  She retired in 1986 after 31 years.


Pete was an active member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in North Charleston, SC.  Over the years she served as Eucharistic Minister, usher, member of the choir, Altar Guild and also served as chairman of the St. Martha's Guild.  She enjoyed playing bridge and gardening.  Pete loved to sing but lost her singing voice to cancer in 1990.


Mrs. Powell is survived by two children, Sara Jo Reese and husband Michael and James L. (Jimmy) Powell and his wife Sydney; five grandchildren:  Kimberley Seabrook, Paige Whitaker and husband Frank, Shane Morey and husband Steve, Austin Powell and wife Rachelle and Matthew Powell; nine great-grandchildren:  Brock, Sean and Katie Seabrook, Brittany Jo Westall and husband Andrew, Powell and Benjamin Whitaker, Lily Grace and Alaina Morey and James Walker Powell; one great-great-grandchild, Kali Reese Westall; two sisters, Carolyn Kinard of North Charleston and Judy Haines and husband Larry of Clayton, NC; and one brother, Klink Kempson and wife Barbara of Norlina, NC; sisters-in-law, Agnes Powell of Hackleburg, AL and Nancy Kempson of Goose Creek; and a host of nieces and nephews.


Funeral services will be held Friday, June 3, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 1150 East Montague in North Charleston, SC.  Burial to follow at Carolina Memorial Park.  Family and friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTH AREA CHAPEL, 2119 Dorchester Road from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2011.


Pallbearers are Austin and Matthew Powell, Brock and Sean Seabrook, Frank Whitaker and Steve Morey.


Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church at 1150 East Montague Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405.
