Sandra Hayes Poulnot

Sandra Hayes Poulnot of Mt. Pleasant, died May 14, 2019 at home with family after a long battle with cancer. Sandra was born May 6, 1942 to Marion Brooks Hayes and Dorothy Lunsford Hayes and lived most of her life in Charleston. She graduated from The High School of Charleston in 1960, from the School of Nursing at MUSC and later from the College of Health Professions. She worked for MUSC for 30 years retiring in 1999. In addition to her nursing duties, she worked on product evaluation and various grants and studies. Sandra also served on the board of directors at the College of Health Professions at MUSC. She served on the Board of Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy and was a Swim Team Coach for Hobcaw Yacht Club.

Sandra is survived by her husband of 55 years, Capers Herbert Poulnot. She is predeceased by her children, Catherine Michele Poulnot and Stewart Capers Poulnot, her older brother, Marion Hayes, Jr. and her brother-in-law Carlton Julian Poulnot, Jr. She is survived by her brother, Donald Hayes (Becky) of Houston, TX; sister-in-law, Donna McCay Poulnot of Mt. Pleasant, SC ; sister-in-law, Nadia Ford Hayes of Houston, TX; nephew, Kirk Poulnot (Betsy) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; niece, Carla Poulnot Kinnett (Van) of the Isle of Palms, SC; nephew, Darren Hayes (Heidi) of League City, TX; niece, Leslie Hayes Davis (Tim) of Carlisle, PA; nephew, Kevin Hayes (Traci) of Seabrook, TX; nephew, David Hayes (Colleen) of Dallas, TX; niece, Robin Hayes Deferrari (Dario) of The Woodlands, TX and 24 grand and great grand nieces and nephews. In addition to blood relatives, she is also survived by Dawn Roberts and her husband, Mark of Asheville, NC whom she loved like her own children; and their children, McKenzie and Aidan, who called her Nana. Sandra was loved by all who knew her.


While raised in St. Johannes Lutheran Church on Hasell Street, she was a 55 year member of St. John's Lutheran Church on Archdale Street where she served as church historian and in numerous other committee positions. Sandra was a member of the Garden Club of Charleston, the Arion Auxiliary and the Hobcaw Yacht Club.

The funeral service for Sandra Poulnot will be held on Friday, May 17, 2019 in St. John's Lutheran Church, 5 Clifford Street, Charleston, SC at 11:00 am. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 16, 2019 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, Mount Pleasant, SC from 5:00 until 7:00 pm.
