Samuel Edison Ward, 92, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Doris Belcher Ward entered into eternal rest Saturday, March 23, 2013. A Funeral Service will be held in the John Wesley United Methodist Church, 626 Savannah Highway, Thursday, March 28, 2013 at 11:00 am. Interment will be in Live Oak Memorial Gardens, 3093 Ashley River Road. The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 27, 2013 in the J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway from 5:00 until 7:00 pm.
Samuel was born October 17, 1920 in Iaeger, West Virginia, son of the late Samuel E. Ward and Hallie Louise Fisher Ward. He proudly served in the United States Air Force as a T/Sgt in World War II as an Air Traffic Controller. He retired as an Insurance Agent with Lincoln National Life Insurance Company. Samuel attended W.VA Tech on a basketball scholarship. He was a Past Master of Iaeger Masonic Lodge, Past President of The Rotary Club of Iaeger, W. VA.,Past President of PTA Stono Park Elementary School and Methodist Men @ John Wesley Methodist Church, Member of the SC Board of PTA, and Former District Commissioner for Boy Scouts of America. One of Samuel's proudest achievements was serving as the delegate from SC to the National PTA Convention. He delivered an impassioned speech which led to co-drafting a bill protecting juvenile offenders. This captured national attention to include the White House which led to legislation keeping juveniles from being sentenced to adult prisons. Samuel was a devoted, generous, Christian gentleman who loved his family, loved life and was an inspiration for all. He always placed others first before his own needs, helping at every opportunity. Samuel was a lover of nature to include teaching his grandchildren fishing and bird watching.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Doris Belcher Ward, daughter, Kathy Ward Williams (Bruce Clement) of Pawleys Island, SC, son, David E. Ward (Mary Ann) of Pinehurst, NC; daughter, Martha Ward Gamble (Rick) of Charleston SC; sister, Marie Ward Morgan of Bluefield, W.VA; grandchildren, Steve Williams (Jill), Brooke David (Byron), Lindsay Williams, David Ward Jr., Maren Ward, Michael Gamble, Harrison Gamble, and many nieces and nephews.
