"Shmeelee," as he was endearingly known to his multitude of friends, was born in Charleston on December 2, 1929 at Baker Hospital, son of the late Jacob and Bella Kreitman Rosen, both of whom were from Kaluszyn, Poland. He attended local schools, including Bennett Elementary School, Rivers Junior High, the High School of Charleston and the College of Charleston. In 1952, he graduated with his B.S. in Pharmacy from the Medical University of South Carolina Pharmacy School. Sam served his country in the Army (rank of Corporal) in the Korean War from 1952-1954. He was a proud member of a large number of organizations, including: AFM Masonic Mariner Lodge #2; Hebrew Benevolent Society; Jewish War Veterans; B'nai Brith; Charleston Jewish Federation; Charleston Pharmaceutical Association (lifetime member); Elks Lodge; and the South Carolina Pharmaceutical Association (lifetime member). He was a life-long member of Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue and served as its president from 1968-1969. He was awarded its Holy Service Award in 2006.

Sam was an extremely generous individual and financially supported over 50 Jewish and non-Jewish associations yearly. His family remains so proud and in awe of the fact that Sam lived into his 90th year without a negative word ever having been uttered about him by anyone…truly a unique and special man.
Sam is survived by his wife, Brenda Myra Rosen, three children; Adam (Tzippi) of Boynton Beach, FL, Eric (Debbie) of Great Neck, NY and Amy of Atlanta, GA; and seven grandchildren; Daniel, Jacob, Rebecca, Michael, Matthew, Jeremy and Jennifer.
