Samuel Alexander Cothran

September 11, 1944 — August 20, 2021

Samuel Alexander Cothran, Jr., 76, of Summerville, South Carolina entered into eternal rest Friday, August 20, 2021. His wife of 52 years, Cecile Langham Cothran, preceded him in death by only nine days. His graveside service will be private. The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 24, 2021, in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc. Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun St. from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Sam was born September 11, 1944, in Augusta, Georgia, son of the late Samuel Alexander Cothran and Nona Crane Cothran. After his father returned from WWII, they settled in Charleston, where his father began a long career with the Post and Courier/Evening Post Industries. After attending Wofford College, Sam also worked in the newspaper business for a number of years and met his wife in doing so.

While still a young man, he launched a successful career in insurance which spanned over several decades and made his permanent home in Summerville in 1980. At one time, he owned the largest insurance agency in the tri-county area. Sam also owned a travel agency for a number of years. Active in his community, his involvement included serving on two local bank boards and on the Board of Trustees at Pinewood Preparatory School. An avid outdoorsman, hunter, and fisherman, Sam was a member of several hunt clubs over the years and was also a longtime volunteer with Ducks Unlimited, including serving them as state publicity chairman. Sam was a member the Carolina Yacht Club and the Jamestown Society and had enjoyed membership in the St. Andrews Society, as well. He was also a member of Summerville Presbyterian Church.

His favorite activity in the latter years was spending time with his grandson, sharing his knowledge and love of the outdoors with him. Sam's sense of humor, wisdom, and overall presence will be missed immensely by his family and friends.

Sam is survived by his daughter, Perrin C. Conrad (Chip) of Summerville, SC; grandson, Kristopher Samuel Conrad of Summerville, SC; two brothers: Thomas C. Cothran (Virginia) of Minneapolis, MN and Frank C. Cothran (Carolyn) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and six nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Ducks Unlimited, One Waterfowl Way, Memphis, TN, 38120, Summerville Presbyterian Church, 407 S Laurel St, Summerville, SC 29483 or Summerville Baptist Church, 417 Central Ave, Summerville, SC 29483.
