It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sallye Carraway Claussen, widow of August Christian Claussen, Jr. The relatives and friends of Sallye Claussen are invited to attend her Funeral Service on Saturday, August 10, 2013 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL at 10:00 a.m. Entombment will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the Mount Pleasant Chapel on Friday, August 9, 2013 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm.
Sallye was born August 31, 1926 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, daughter of the late Claude W. Carraway and the late Verlie Martin Carraway. Raised in downtown Charleston, she and Chris resided in Mt Pleasant for 25 years until retiring to Umatilla, FL in 1994. She attended Charleston schools and was a music graduate from Meredith College in Raleigh, NC. Sallye taught school for 29 years, spending most of her career at Whitesides Elementary where she was a beloved fourth grade teacher. She was the first president of the Alpha Mu chapter of the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority, past President of the Classroom
Teachers Association in Mt. Pleasant and was awarded a life membership in the PTA. She was also a past member of the Hobcaw Yacht Club. Sallye was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother as well as a second mother to many kids in Hobcaw Point neighborhood.
She is survived by a son, August Christian Claussen, III and his wife, Lori, of Mount Pleasant, SC; a daughter, Claudia Claussen Greer and her husband, Dr. Richard Greer, of Umatilla, FL; two brothers, Col. Claude W. Carraway of Las Vegas, NV and Thomas Walter Carraway of Summerville, SC; four granddaughters, Courtney Greer Latter, Dr. Kalee Claussen, Meredith Greer Konnerth and Allison Greer and one great grandchild, Jadyn William Latter.
