Ruth Lawson Tucker

Ruth Lawson Tucker, 97 passed January 13, 2013. She was born October 15, 1915 in Lawsonville, NC to Tyler Frank Lawson and Emma Spencer Lawson. She grew up on the farm as the third oldest child with many responsibilities. Her mother died when she was eight years old leaving her father with seven children. Her father never remarried and continued to work his farm and love his children. Her father helped established Snow Hill Church. Ruth was baptized in Little Snow Creek near the church in August 1928. She continued to serve the church until 2009.
She and her sister Rachel Lawson Martin and her mother Emma shared the same birthday.
She is survived by her son John Neal Tucker, Jr. and his wife Patricia Martin Tucker of Mount Pleasant, S.C. and their son John Justin Tucker of Charleston, SC., her sister Rachel Lawson Martin who resides with her son in Crouse, NC., and many generations of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband John Neal Tucker.
Her father was an advocate of education and encouraged his children to attend school. Ruth attended a two room school near her home for eight years and then the new brick school in Lawsonville through the 10th grade. To finish high school, she had to attend Nancy Reynolds School which had the eleventh and final high school grade. She received her High School diploma in 1932.
She attended Appalachian State Teachers College 1932-1934 graduating with a Teaching diploma. Later she continued her education at High Point College receiving an A Teaching Certificate.
She taught at Lawsonville School from 1934 until retirement in 1975 with the exception of two years when her son was born.
After WWII, she became a member of the Ladies Auxilliary of VFW Post 5953. She enjoyed selling Poppies to help disabled veterans and decorating the graves of deceased veterans each Memorial Day.
After a serious illness in 2009, she came to live with her son in Mount Pleasant, SC. Later that year she entered Franke at Seaside assisted living facility. We were blessed to have her close for these years. The staff at Franke lovingly cared for her and were her friends.
The Funeral service will be held at Snow Hill Church on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 2:00 pm, Rev. Doug Pryor and Rev. Richard Childers will officiate the service. Mrs. "Ruthie" will be buried in the church cemetery. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL (843-881-9293).
