Ruth Ellen Goe Toney

Ruth Ellen Goe Toney, 89, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of Edgar Allen Toney, Sr. entered into eternal rest Thursday, February 8, 2024. Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashley Chapel, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends Tuesday in the West Ashley Chapel one hour prior to service.

Ruth was born August 17, 1934 in LaBelle, Florida, daughter of the late James Randolph Goe and Lessie Mae McDaniel Goe. Ruth lost her mother at the early age of four years old. Shortly after she was placed in the Florida Methodist Children's Home in Enterprise, FL along with her older sister, Tilly and her baby brother, James "Jim."

Ruth met her future husband, Edgar Allen Toney at the Children's Home in the early 1940's. They were married on September 8, 1957 and were married for over 50 years until Edgar's passing March 17, 2008. Ruth and Edgar had two children: Edgar, Jr. and Linda Renee. The family moved numerous times cross country including three years in Hawaii, finally retiring in Jacksonville, NC. After Ruth's retirement from Stanadyne Diesel Systems as the purchaser, in 1966 they moved to Edisto Island, SC. There Ruth and Edgar built their retirement home when Edgar was diagnosed with cancer during construction. Ruth became a caretaker to Edgar, until they decided to move one last time to Deland, FL to be around family and old friends they grew up with. Upon Edgar's passing in 2008, Ruth resided alone until at the urging of her children to relocate back to Charleston, SC to live with her daughter, Linda and her husband, Ivan.

Ruth was a member of the Daughter's of the American Revolution by way of Patriot Daniel Boone. She enjoyed the Lowcountry of South Carolina very much and was an avid reader.  During her husband’s twenty-eight career in the United States Marine Corp, Ruth volunteered and worked for the Red Cross at Parris Island, SC, and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.    Ruth was also a member of the Ragged Point Yacht Club at Camp Lejeune, NC where she and her husband enjoyed sailing on aboard their yacht the  “Tuition”.  While located in Deland, Florida she was a member of First United Methodist Church from 2009 until 2012, until she relocated to Charleston, SC.  She was a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization ( P.E.O) a Sisterhood of women who are purposeful and passionate about celebrating, supporting and motivating women.  Ruth remained a member until her passing. Ruth was a dear friend to many, the  “rock and soul” of her family.

Her family wishes to thank Ms. Nellie White who cared for and became one her dearest friends the last 7 years of her life.

Ruth is survived by her son, Edgar Toney, Jr. (Barbara); daughter, Linda R. Schultz (Ivan); and granddaughters: Bonnie Aileene and Savannah Schultz.
