Ruth Henderson Hood Smith

September 20, 1914 — August 30, 2014

Ruth Henderson Hood Smith, of Charleston, S.C., devoted wife of Fred Harden Smith for 54 years, entered into eternal rest Saturday, August 30, 2014. Her funeral service will be Wednesday, September 3, 2014, in St. Philip's Church, 142 Church Street, at 11:00 a.m. Interment, Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 2, 2014, in J.HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Ruth was born September 20, 1914 in Pickens, S.C., daughter of Robert Llewellyn Henderson and Viola Looper Henderson. She was an accomplished artist, loved to play bridge and was a member of St. Philip's Church. Ruth loved her family and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a very positive influence in their lives.

Ruth is survived by her husband; four children: Llewellyn Hood Kassebaum (Philip), James Albert Hood, Jr., Robert Holmes Hood (Bernie) and Richard Scott Hood (Nancy), all of Charleston, S.C.; a sister, Llewellyn Henderson Peterson of Anderson, S.C.; 11 grandchildren: Llewellyn Huger Sinkler (Oscar Shamamian), George Dana Sinkler Jr. (Elizabeth), James Marshall Sinkler (Carline), Huger Sinkler II (Michelle), Mary Agnes Hood Craig (Steven), Elizabeth Hood Willis (Gardi), Robert Holmes Hood Jr. (Jean), James Bernard Hood (Katy), Nona Ruth Hood, Nancy Hood Egleston (DuBose), and Jennifer Hood Emerson (Ryan); and 21 great-grandchildren: Llewellyn Kittredge Shamamian, Isabel Chanler Shamamian, Judith Legare Sinkler, Alida Canfield Sinkler, Haley Alexandra Sinkler, James Marshall Sinkler Jr., Peter Marshall Sinkler, Anna Huger Sinkler, Steven Aubrey Craig, Mary Agnes Craig, Michael Holmes Craig, Caroline Bradford Burnham Willis, Elizabeth Gardiner Willis, Robert Holmes Hood III, Joseph Harrington Hood, Kathryn Matheson Hood, Elizabeth Vining Hood, James Burnham Hood, David DuBose Egleston III, Mills Faxon Egleston and Llewellyn Hood Egleston. Ruth was predeceased by her first husband, James Albert Hood.
