Ruth Kirshtein Kaplan, 87, of Charleston, South Carolina, died after a heroic and long battle with cancer on Thursday, January 11, 2018. She died at home as she wished, surrounded by those she loved and who loved her. Her Graveside Service will be held Friday, January 12, 2018 in Brith Sholom Beth Israel Cemetery (Maryville), Sycamore Avenue at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Ruth was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina on March 18, 1930, the daughter of Abe Kirshtein and Edith Cohen Kirshtein. She attended Bennett School and Meminger High School as well as Palmer Business College.
Family and her Jewish faith were paramount to Ruth, and she dedicated her life to both. She was a devoted member of Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue as were her parents and grandparents before her. Ruth was also a life member of Brith Sholom Beth Israel Sisterhood as well as a life member of Hadassah. She had an abiding love of family history and history in general, manifested by her having worked with the National Trust property of Drayton Hall as well as serving as a docent at the Edmondston-Alston House.
She is survived by two sons: Jeffrey Kaplan and Sam Kaplan, both of Charleston, SC; daughter, Laura Kaplan Cooper of Silver Spring, MD; three brothers: Sammy Kirshtein (Mitzi), Louis Kirshtein, and Solomon H. Kirshtein (Joyce), all of Charleston, SC; three grandchildren: Erin Cooper Stiebel (David) of Detroit, MI, Steven Cooper (Yelena) and Amy Cooper Hakim (Elad), both of Boca Raton, FL; ten great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Rosalie Kirshtein Garber.
