Rudolph William Lutge, Sr., 90, of James Island, loving husband of Nell Elizabeth Badger Lutge, passed away on Sunday, April 17, 2016. His funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 20, 2016, in Bethany United Methodist Church, 1853 Maybank Highway at 11 a.m. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday in the church fellowship hall from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Rudolph was born September 2, 1925 in Charleston, SC, a son of the late Henry F. Lutge, Sr. and Margaret Gerdes Lutge. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Motor Machinist Mate 3rd Class from 1941-1945. Mr. Lutge was stationed with a Beach Jumper Unit on PT-213 in the Mediterranean and Southern France for 18 months. He was then sent to the Navy Seabee School in Rhode Island and then stationed in Saipan building air strips until the end of the war. He loved his country and was very proud of the service he provided during World War II.
In 1947, he attended Murray Vocational School under the GI Bill. In 1948, he started working at Ray Waits Pontiac as a mechanic. He also worked at Mike Murray Pontiac and James Oldsmobile, retiring in 1988. Mr. Lutge was an avid Stingray Hockey fan, loved fishing in the Wando River, and was a Model HO railroad enthusiast.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Nell; his daughters: Elizabeth Warren, Patricia Mylin (Bill), and Robin Hunt; his son, Rudy Lutge, Jr.; his twin brother, Fred L. Lutge, Sr.; seven grandchildren: Willie Mylin (Amy), Linda Davies (Tim), Andy Mylin (Julie), Ali Mylin-Otherson (Shaun), Rhett Warren (Gracie), Alicia Hunt, and Juddson Green; five great-grandchildren; and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Henry F. Lutge, Jr.; and a son, Henry Fred Lutge.
