Ruby Klintworth Henson Preacher, 97, a resident of the Presbyterian Home, The Village At Summerville, SC died Tuesday, September 27, 2016. She was born Ruby Elfreda Klintworth at Ashepoo, SC, on April 28, 1919 and spent her childhood and youth in St. Stephen, SC, the oldest child of Mayor Otto Fred and Mrs. Pearl Cummings Klintworth.
After finishing her early education in the St. Stephen schools, she attended Greenville Women's College of Furman University for one year.
Ruby was married in 1936 to John L. "Slim" Henson, who later served in the SC State Legislature. Rep. Henson died in 1978. In 1985 she married Col. Brooks C. Preacher, US Army Ret. of Taylors, SC. Col. Preacher died in 2003.
During World War II, she served as a Civil Servant at the Army Port of Embarkation. She later worked as an accountant with Gibson Tire service and retired after twenty years.
As a longtime resident of Charleston and North Charleston, Ruby was active in the community and held office in several organizations, including the Business and Professional Women's Club and the Charleston Lion's Club Auxiliary. She volunteered as a Tax Preparer with the AARP until she was 90.
She was a member of Park Circle Presbyterian Church for many years and served as an Elder and Sunday School teacher. She recently became a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Charleston.
In addition to her parents, Rep. Henson, and Col. Preacher, she was predeceased by her brother, Otto F. Klintworth, Jr. and a nephew James Daniel Klintworth.
She is survived by her stepsons, Brooks Preacher and his wife, Ruby Ann of Hartwell, GA and Dr. Stephen Preacher and his wife, Ronda of Lynchburg, VA; six grandsons: Brooks Conner, Tim Conner, Daniel Preacher, Earl Preacher, Reagan Preacher and Ryan Preacher; several great-grandchildren; her brother, Dennis Klintworth and his wife, Sally, of Charlotte, NC; her sister-in-law, Dorothy T. Klintworth of North Charleston; four nephews: Fred, John, Mike and Steve Klintworth; and a number of great-nephews and nieces.
The family wishes to thank the staff of The Village at Summerville and especially her personal caregivers for their faithful and loving care of Ruby. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in St. Stephen at 11:00 am, Friday, September 30, 2016 followed by a memorial service at the chapel of the Village at Summerville at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends following the service.
