Ruby Katherine Cosgrove, 72, of Charleston, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, October 29, 2024, after facing a prolonged battle with Alzheimer's disease. Her funeral service will be held Thursday, November 7, 2024 in St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 206 Central Ave., Summerville, SC 29483 at 1:00 pm. Inurnment will follow in the columbarium. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel.
Ruby was born April 22, 1952 in Bryan, Texas, daughter of the late Paul Ernest Barker, CMSgt USAF (Ret.) and the late Emilie Weinbuch Barker. Growing up as a military dependent, she had the opportunity to live in Germany and around the U.S. After graduating from York High School in Virginia, as well as Orangeburg Regional Hospital School of Nursing, She went on to earn her BSN and MSN from MUSC's College of Nursing. Ruby spent most of her nursing career working in public health at the Coastal Center, Charleston County and Dorchester County Health Departments, and as a school nurse at Summerville High School. A long-time member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, she was very active in WELCA and provided support for youth and children's ministry for many years. She also volunteered with Girl Scouts, Summerville Band Boosters, Piccolo Spoleto, and the Historic Charleston Foundation.
She is survived by daughter, Sarah E. Vega (Andrew) of Isle of Palms, SC; her two grandchildren, Christian and Emilie; and three sisters, Rebecca Nuzzi (Tony) and Tillie Phillips, both of Summerville, SC, and Paula Andrews (David) of Whitmire, SC.
